Nothing to LAHFA about – Sydney’s expats are on the move

From October 1, the government has tightened the screws on the living away from home allowance (LAFHA) that expats used to enjoy.  Reforms have closed LAFHA tax breaks and put limits on accommodation and food benefits for employees working away from home.

Moving house boxes australia sydneyTwo out of the last three deliveries for Beetlebox were for (British) expats who were downsizing after having their income available for rent slashed!  One way to save money while moving from your swanky waterfront pad to your drafty apartment with parking lot view and ‘water glimpses’ (in estate agent parlance!) is to use plastic moving boxes when you move house!  Don’t use paper or cardboard boxes since they are weak and will disintegrate (much like LAHFA did…).

Depending on how you look at it, the effect of these moves could be good or bad.  Dwellings  in the high rent sector (above $1,000 per week) will have less demand, which may cause downward pressure on prices.  Meanwhile the $500-$1000 sector, will face increased demand, with suitable homes much harder to find.
